Getting started

What to bring to a first retirement planning conversation

A first meeting says more when the numbers are on the table. You do not need everything on this list. Bring what you have.

Your accounts

  • The latest statement for each workplace plan: 401(k), 403(b), 457 or TSP
  • Traditional and Roth IRA statements
  • Brokerage, savings and CD statements
  • Any annuity contracts, with their most recent statement

Your income, now and later

  • Pension estimates or statements, including the payout options
  • Your Social Security statement, which you can download from your my Social Security account
  • Any other income: rental property, part-time work, a business

Your coverage

  • Your Medicare card and any plan cards, or details of your employer health plan
  • Life insurance and long-term care policies

Taxes and spending

  • Last year’s tax return
  • A rough monthly budget, and any large costs you already expect: a car, a roof, help for family

The paperwork for the people after you

  • Who is named as beneficiary on each account and policy
  • Whether you have a will or a trust, and when it was last updated

Questions worth asking any advisor

These are fair questions for anyone you are thinking of working with, including us.

  • How are you paid, and by whom?
  • Are you acting as a fiduciary on this recommendation?
  • Which licences do you hold, and where can I look them up?
  • Where will my money be held?
  • What happens if I want to change course later?

Licences and registrations can be checked on FINRA BrokerCheck and on the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure site.

After the first conversation

  1. Discovery. Clarify goals, timeframes, and risk comfort. We inventory accounts, cash flow, and obligations to set a shared baseline and a definition of success.
  2. Strategy. Identify gaps and opportunities across investments, insurance, taxes, and income. You get a prioritized, actionable plan - what to do, why, and when.
  3. Implementation. We execute in coordinated steps, align accounts to your goals, automate where it helps, and review regularly as life and markets evolve.

At Osprey, this is the first step, Discovery. The rest of the process is on the How we work page. How we work
